SELKTA Series #005 — Hubsch

Johannesburg selector Michelle Hübsch doesn't follow a straight line.

Her sets move between genres, moods and unexpected corners of South African music — built around storytelling, emotion and the joy of finding something you didn't know you needed.

SELKTA Selector Notes

How would you describe the sound or mood of your mix?

Colourful, energetic, very freestyle.

What kind of space were you trying to create with this selection?

Outer space, haha.

What does being a selector mean to you?

I feel like, to me, it means knowing the difference between what I like and what I don’t like, and being brave enough to put that out there. A lot of DJs hold back, in my opinion. There’s so much music out there in the world, and I don’t think we get to hear enough of it on dancefloors and in mixes.

I think taking risks is important, and more DJs need to explore their freaky side. You can’t just become a DJ because you think it looks cool. Music needs to move you and touch you, and you need to be very curious and open-minded to keep finding good stuff.

Are there any tracks in the mix that feel especially important to you right now?

All of them. I don’t want to play anything I’m not obsessed with.

What sounds, scenes or artists have been sitting in your rotation lately?

Of course, what has been included in the mix, but also some different inspiring artists like Holger Czukay, Tara Cross and Can, and old South African music when I’m feeling nostalgic. I haven’t really been listening to electronic or dance music in my day-to-day. The rest is classified.

Where do you think people should listen to this mix?

All of the above.

What do you want people to feel after hearing your transmission?

Like they want more.
