SELKTA Notes - Justin Case

How would you describe the sound or mood of this mix?

Travelling and camping with your favourite people.

Outside with no curbs or traffic. Bona lefatshe and relax.

The world is so tense right now. All the time though.

What kind of space were you trying to create with this selection?

A spiritual Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

A selection to get your soul and mind geared up for eons.

Your ear moves between rap, R&B, jazz, club sounds and experimental production. What connects those worlds for you?

Food and travelling.

I use the Chef Sanza ideology. Anthony Bourdain calls it "gastronomic smuggling."

I'm constantly moving through different spaces for sounds. Musicians satiate my craving for chord progressions, horns, string sections and Drum & Bass.

I guess ears have palates too.

What does Johannesburg sound like to you right now?

Johannesburg sounds like Gaza.

Name 3 artists, tracks or projects currently in your rotation.

2nd Natur(e) - The Toys Just Got Bigger

Pumas + Roses - I Almost Said Goodbye

Good Looking Records has many great Drum & Bass producers, and I'm playing all of them. MC Conrad and LTJ Bukem are my go-to duo off top.

What does being a selector mean to you?

Listen to everything else, not just what people want.

A lot of those people don't know what they want anyway, so I'm collecting everything I love - even Tibetan chants, gazi.

We're jamming soundscapes heavy bro.

Where should people listen to this mix?

While painting a mural or in a ceramic/pottery studio.

Bluetooth speaker at the skate park.

While tidying your workspace or room.

On a drive passing mountains in Swaziland.

Or headphones, ekse. Dala mix ena!

What do you want people to feel after hearing this mix?

To go for a run or cycle in your neighbourhood.

Stay dangerous.

About Justin Case

Justin Case is a Johannesburg-based DJ, producer and selector with a wide ear for sound, movement and atmosphere.

His selections move through rap, R&B, jazz, club sounds, Drum & Bass, experimental production and deep soundscape-heavy textures. Rather than staying in one lane, Justin approaches music like travel - moving through different spaces, moods and influences with curiosity.

For SELKTA Series #002, he brings a transmission that feels open, spiritual and restless. He describes the mix as "travelling and camping with your favourite people" - outside with no curbs or traffic, with space to breathe, listen and reset.

His approach to selection is rooted in feeling, discovery and range. From rap to Tibetan chants, from jazz textures to Drum & Bass, Justin collects what he loves and builds worlds through sound.

SELKTA Series #002 captures that instinct fully: a mix for movement, reflection, open roads, workspaces, skate parks and headphones.
